10 Days of A-Sun Basketball: Kennesaw State

Monday, October 23, 2006

Ten Days of A-Sun Basketball continues with an inside look at Kennesaw State. As the Kennesaw State women's basketball teams heads into its second year in Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Lady Owls are ready in 2006-07 to show that last year's down season was a fluke, and not the norm. Although the loss of KSU's top three scorers (Shavonder Clarke, Danielle Bates, Dominika Mieszkowska) and assistant coach Ginny Boggess will make the task a little bit more difficult. Five newcomers and new assistant coach James Black will add to the mix that saw last year's squad win two of its final five games, with two of the loses being by three points each. Saying that last season was a rough year would be an understatement, but head coach Colby Tilley expects improvement out of this year's squad.

With an influx of five new freshmen and the return of center Stephanie Scearce, who sat out last season with a torn ACL, the light is shining brightly on the Lady Owls and it is now their time to show that they can be a force to be reckoned with in the A-Sun in '06-'07.

The 2006-07 schedule will see the Lady Owls play some big name opponents during the non-conference slate, as well as the usual Atlantic Sun schedule. The regular season kicks off at home on November 10 with KSU taking on Jacksonville State. The Lady Owls will be looking to redeem themselves from last year's 92-87 defeat. Followed by that, KSU will hit the road to play in a two-day tournament at UNC-Asheville, and then a game at Winthrop. After breaking for Thanksgiving, the Lady Owls will stay on the road and open up A-Sun play on November 30 with a trip to Stetson. KSU will then return to the state of Georgia to take on Mercer, followed by the Lady Owls' December 7 at Georgia Tech, the first match-up with the Yellow Jackets since KSU's inaugural season of 1982-83. The Lady Owls' season-long seven-game road trip will conclude three days later as KSU meets another Atlantic Coast Conference foe, Clemson.

After more than a month away, KSU will return to the friendly confines of the KSU Convocation Center to host Charleston Southern. The homestand will be short-lived, however, as the Lady Owls venture away from KSU for a game at Austin Peay, and then two games against UNC-Asheville and Savannah State as part of the Mercer Holiday Tournament in Macon on December 29-30. The new year begins with KSU returning home and to conference play with visits from Belmont and Lipscomb. The Lady Owls will next travel to the Tar Heel State to take on Gardner-Webb and Campbell, before returning home for three straight A-Sun games against Jacksonville, North Florida and East Tennessee State.

Visits to Lipscomb and Belmont are next on the docket, followed by home games versus Campbell and Gardner-Webb. The Lady Owls will then hit the road for the final time, as they make return trips to North Florida, Jacksonville and ETSU. A non-conference home game against Longwood follows as the season winds down. The Lady Owls with then conclude the season with two final home contests, as Mercer and Stetson come to town.
