Monday, December 18, 2006 The Belmont was unable to topple 14th-ranked Louisville over the weekend and falling, 80-51, and ending a five-game win streak. It marked the only the third time this season the Bruins fell to a top-25 team. Sophomore Alysha Clark netted nine points and junior Laura Cowley added seven. Senior Angel Jones and Clark led the team in rebounding, each pulling down seven. The Bruins complete the 2006 portion of their schedule on the road at Alabama on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. CT. The Lady Camels travel to UNC Wilmington Monday night in search of their first road victory of the season before taking 11 days off for the Christmas break. Marlena Murphy has taken over as the leader on the floor for the Lady Camels posting double-doubles in each of the last three games, including a career-high 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds against High Point. Following the break, the Lady Camels visit former A-Sun member Florida Atlantic on December 29 in the opening round of the FAU New Year’s Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. After a 13 day break in between action the Lady Bucs returned to the court and lost a heartbreaker to Southeast Missouri State on Friday night. ETSU held a 12-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the contest and lost 73-68 on the road. ETSU will play two games as they head to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech on Monday night. The Lady Bucs will return home Wednesday night where they have not played in 26 days, as they face Big South foe Radford. The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday night with a 66-44 win over Longwood. The Bulldogs were led by Candyse Kelly's 14 points while freshman Margaret Roundtree notched the first double-double of the season for GWU with a career-high 12 points and 10 rebounds. GWU hits the road for a game against UNC-Asheville on Tuesday in its only game of the week. After UNCA, the Bulldogs will take part in the Lehigh tournament on Dec. 29-30. Freshman forward Crystal Grable made her collegiate debut against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 16 recovering from knee surgery. She tallied three points and six rebounds in seven minutes. Junior forward Ashley Williams tallied a season-high three blocks against BCC. JU leads the A-Sun in scoring , scoring margin, field-goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, and turnover margin. The Lady Owls are playing much better defense than they did in their first year in the A-Sun. After allowing opponents to shoot 46.7 percent a year ago, Kennesaw State has been holding teams to just 36.9 percent this season. The Lady Owls travel to Austin Peay on Tuesday night before returning to the state of Georgia for the Mercer Blade Holiday Classic on Dec. 29-30. Sophomore forward Miriam McAlister has played in only two games this season, but scored in double figures in both of them and earned one double-double. She is listed as indefinitely out due to medical reasons. Also gone for the season is Tiffany Arnold who is also out for medical reasons. The Lady Bisons return to action Wednesday when they face host Vanderbilt in the first round of their tournament. Also in the field are Longwood and Indiana State. Mercer plays back-to-back games for the second time this season, visiting New Orleans on Dec. 19 and playing Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 20. Not only will players Erin Keller and Nicole Leonard be making homecomings to Louisiana this week, but interim head coach Sybil Blalock is very familiar with the Crescent City. Blalock spent eight seasons as an assistant at UNO (1985-93) and played two seasons (1979-81) for the WBL’s New Orleans Pride. North Florida will try to rebound this week from a loss at Bethune-Cookman when it travels to UCF for a pair of tournament games Monday and Tuesday. UNF is 1-3 in tournament play in 2006, defeating NJIT for its only tournament win. The Lady Ospreys will see two former A-Sun schools in Orlando, taking on host UCF as well as Georgia State. The Lady Ospreys will take a break for the holidays after their trip to UCF before hosting their first game at UNF Arena on Dec. 29. Though Stetson came up short against FAMU, losing 77-73 in the final seconds of the game, junior Jamie Nesbit put up a team season-high and career-high 28 points. Nesbit went 10-14 from the field, including 8-11 from three point range. Next up the Hatters take to the road for a game against the Florida Gators on Monday, December 18 at 7 pm. |
