Tuesday, January 02, 2007 Belmont fell just short of picking up its second SEC win of the season on the road at Alabama on December 20th. The Bruins were edged by one point, 52-51, as time expired and a three-point shot by true freshman Shaunda Strayhorn popped out of the hoop. Sophomore Alysha Clark otched her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The Bruins will take a break for the holidays and will return to action on January 4th on the road at Kennesaw State. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. The Campbell womens basketball team wraps up a five-game road swing this weekend in the River City as the Lady Camels dip back into Atlantic Sun Conference play against North Florida and Jacksonville. The Lady Camels continue to be led by junior forward Marlena Murphy. The Fayetteville, N.C. native has scored over 20 points in three of her last four games and has double-doubles in four of her last six contests. The Lady Camels enter the game ranked second in the Atlantic Sun in free throw percentage (71.4) and rebounding margin (+2.8) and are middle of the pack in scoring ranking fifth (59.5). The Lady Bucs closed out the 2006 portion of their schedule winning five of their last seven games, and completed their non-conference schedule. ETSUs non-conference opponents are currently a combined 88-45. ETSU will restart conference play Thursday when they host Lipscomb. The Lady Bucs are 21-8 (.724) against active members in the Atlantic Sun. Junior Jenny Norman is averaging 10.3 ppg and 4.9 rpg over her last seven contests, and has scored double figures in five of those games. Norman also leads the conference with a .636 (7-11) shooting percentage in two league games this season. The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team lost two tough games at the Christmas City Classic in Bethlehem, Pa., last week. GWU fell to Lehigh 74-61 in the opening round. Three Bulldogs posted double figures in the scoring column and were led by Candyse Kelly's 17 points. In the 77-64 loss to Central Michigan, Kelly had one of the best all-around performances in GWU history with 28 points and seven assists. The Bulldogs will look to pick up their first road win of the season as they return to conference play. GWU travels to Florida where it will tangle with Jacksonville and North Florida. JU snapped a two game losing streak with its 57-53 win over Florida A&M. It marked the first game between the two schools in program history. Sophomore guard Virginia Gregoire led JU with 16 points to lead the squad in scoring for the third time this season JUs 6-4 non-conference record is the best in program history. KSU went 1-1 last week, falling to UNC Asheville but rebounding to beat Savannah State in the Mercer Blade holiday classic. Forward Rosetta Hollis had a monster week for the Lady Owls, averaging 20.0 points and 13.5 rebounds in the two games. She notched a career-high in points (22) and rebounds (18) in KSU's win over Savannah State. KSU learned late last week that Ngoneh Gaye, the team's leading rebounder, will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury. No team notes provided Chelsea Seabron grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, 14 coming on the defensive end, against Savannah State on Dec. 29 in the Mercer Blade Holiday Classic. She finished the game 15 behind Linda Callahan, who holds Mercers single game record with 31 rebounds against Catawba on Jan. 11, 1975. The Bears continue their season-long four-game home stand this week. Mercer concludes its non-conference schedule against Mississippi State Jan. 2 and returns to Atlantic Sun action against Stetson Jan. 6. UNF dropped its only game of the week, falling to Hofstra at home 63-41. The loss was the first ever in a home opener for the Lady Ospreys, which had won 14 straight. Shennette Sheffield scored nine points for the Lady Ospreys filling in for the injured Antoinette Reames. The Lady Ospreys return to conference play this week when they host Campbell and Gardner-Webb. In their first game since the holiday break, the Hatters took on a tough foe in the Hofstra Pride. The Pride went into Sundays competition with an impressive 10-1 record. The Hatters were able to stay with the Pride, never falling more than three points behind for the first 10 minutes. The Pride went on to take the win 70-39. Senior Janene Maclin lead the way for the Hatters with 12 points and six rebounds, followed closely by sophomore Sharnesha Smith with 11 points and four rebounds. |
