Hot Shooting GWU Stuns Jacksonville, 75-64

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Redshirt-junior Candyse Kelly netted a team-high 19 points while senior Brittany Harmon posted her second straight double-double enabling the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team to a 75-64 victory Thursday night in Paul Porter Arena.

The Bulldogs even their mark in conference play at 5-5 while standing at 8-13 overall on the season. The Dolphins fall to 12-8 on the year and 6-4 in Atlantic Sun competition. Harmon, after posting 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks in the win over Lipscomb, recorded 11 points, 10 rebounds and added four blocks tonight. Freshman Margaret Roundtree drained a career-high 14 points on six-of-nine shooting.

Fellow freshmen Brittany Boyce also reached double figures after tallying 11 in the game. Senior Shameka Smith narrowly missed a double-double as she recorded a game-high 13 rebounds while dropping in nine points.

In addition to Kelly’s 19 points, she dished out a game-high five assists and recorded a game-best three thefts. In front of a crowd of 271 and playing on CSS, GWU used a 22-4 run midway through the first half en route to a 38-29 advantage into intermission and would not trail the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs kept the Dolphins winless in Paul Porter Arena with their superb shooting. GWU hit 51 percent of its shots (25-of-49), including five-of-eight from the three-point line. The Bulldogs also drained 20-of-26 free throws (76.9 percent).

JU hit 41.3 percent (26-of-63) of its shots, but hit just two-of-10 from behind the arc. Eight Bulldogs reached the scoring column. In addition to the four in double figures and Smith’s nine, freshmen Meranda Burnett and Jenny Sprouse each dropped in four points while senior Novia Sturdivant’s three points came on a trey.

The Bulldogs will look to knock off North Florida, who posted a 74-73 victory at Campbell Thursday evening. GWU and UNF are slated to tip-off at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Paul Porter Arena.
