11 Days of A-Sun Women's Basketball: Mercer

MACON, Ga. - Each day from Oct. 29th through Nov. 12th, the Atlantic Sun Conference will preview the upcoming 2010-11 women's basketball season with 11 Days of Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball. Today, we talk with Kourtney Carter, a senior center for the Mercer Bears.

Top Returning Scorer: Niecey Lewis, Junior Guard – After ranking fourth in scoring on last year’s team, Lewis returns for her junior season as the top returning scorer with her 6.2 points per game to go along with her 2.9 rebounds per outing. In conference games, Lewis increased her point production to 7.1 per game as well as her rebounding at 3.2.

Lewis is joined by the lone senior on the team, Kourtney Carter, who averaged 5.7 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. Twice last season, Lewis led the team in scoring including a 22-point outburst on the road at FGCU on Jan. 23rd in which she knocked down 8-of13 shots including two three-pointers.

Season Opening Game: Mercer at Auburn, Nov. 12th at 6 p.m. -Following a 14-16 campaign in 2010, Mercer kicks off under new head coach Susie Gardner, who comes to the Bears’ program from the University of Florida, where she served as the assistant coach for seasons. The Bears’ roster full with ten total underclassmen takes on a Tiger squad that returns four starters coming back from a 15-16 season.

Conference Game to Watch: Stetson at Mercer, Feb. 14th at 7 p.m. – The Bears finished last season as the two-seed in the A-Sun Championship with a 11-9 conference record, but fell in the quarterfinals to UNF. This season, Mercer returns only two starters and five letterwinners, while bringing in five newcomers; however the Bears own a five-game winning streak against the Hatters including a 14-point victory last season at the UC.
