11 Days of A-Sun Women's Basketball: Belmont

MACON, Ga. - Each day from Oct. 29th through Nov. 12th, the Atlantic Sun Conference will preview the upcoming 2010-11 women's basketball season with 11 Days of Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball. Today, we talk with Haley Nelson, a junior all-conference forward for the Belmont Bruins.

Top Returning Scorer: Haley Nelson, Junior Post – Only a junior, Nelson comes into the 2010-11 season as the Bruins’ top-returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 13.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game last season. In the 27 games last season, Nelson led the team in rebounding 23 times and was Belmont’s top scorer in 12 games. Her top-rebounding performance came against UT-Martin and against Kennesaw State in the A-Sun Championship in which she pulled down 20 boards, while her best point production came on the road against Stetson when she registered 21 points. To go along with her rebounding and scoring skills, Nelson also recorded 56 blocks in total last year.

Season Opening Game: Belmont at Winthrop, Nov. 12th at 6 p.m. (EST) - Head Coach Brittany Ezell opens her campaign as Belmont’s third coach in program history on the road in the Winthrop Classic against the hosting Eagles. Last season, the Bruins opened the season on a six-game winning streak, which began with an 85-76 victory against Central Arkansas. Ezell comes to Belmont after spending the past two seasons as head coach at University of Montevallo.

Conference Game to Watch: FGCU at Belmont, Jan. 31st at 7 p.m. –Last season, FGCU claimed both games against the Bruins by an average 27 points en route to finishing second in the league. In those two matchups, Nelson led the team in scoring and rebounding with a 14 point, 6 rebound effort at home and a 16 point and 9 rebound performance in Fort Myers. This season, the Eagles return two starters and the Bruins bring back three starters.
