Saturday, November 13, 2010 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Three players for the FGCU women's basketball team scored in double figures as the Eagles defeated Seton Hall, 64-57, in the season opener for both squads on Saturday night in front of 1,963 fans at Alico Arena. Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) scored in all 12 of her team-high 12 points in the second half to lead a trio of players in double figures for FGCU. Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla/Dunbar HS/Seminole CC) and Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) each chipped in with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Sarah Hansen (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) scored nine points and grabbed five boards in her first collegiate start. The Eagles shot 45.5-percent from the field in the second half, after only managing only a 23.8 percent (5-21) clip in the opening 20 minutes. The Eagles enjoyed a 44-16 edge in free throw attempts, making 29 to SHU’s 11. Seton Hall claimed a 33-30 edge on the glass and shot 40.4-percent to FGCU’s 34.9-percent. In the first half, both teams seemed to come out tight as the Pirates scratched and clawed to take a 24-19 lead at the intermission. Both teams combined for 36 turnovers, 26 fouls and 29.8-percent shooting from the field in the opening stanza. |
