MACON, Ga. - Fourteen women's basketball games are slated for play over the next six days including league play starting pack up on Monday, January 2nd. Eight contests can be seen on ASun.TV.
Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Weekly Notes:
- A-Sun teams are a combined 10-5 in the past 15 non-conference home contests. In total, Atlantic Sun teams are 10-7 in the last non-conference games.
- FGCU remained at No. 4 in the CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Poll for the third-straight week. Stetson received 22 votes in the poll for the fifth team in receiving votes.
- Two A-Sun student-athletes are nearing the 1,000 career point mark. Belmont’s Haley Nelson (977 points) and USC Upstate’s Tee’Ara Copney (943 points) can reach the mark in their next couple of games. Lipscomb’s Anna Bowers (914) is also nearing the career mark. Currently, there are only two active players with 1,000 points; UNF’s Brittany Kirkland and FGCU’s Kelsey Jacobson.
- FGCU’s Jacobson recently tied the A-Sun career record for three-pointers made. Her 275 career threes are tied for most all-time with Stetson’s Kristen Follis (1990-94).
- Mercer’s Briana Williams has registered at least 20 points in the past two games. Her 50 points in the past two games has pushed her season average to 14.8 PPG, which ranks fourth-most in the A-Sun. Her 685 career points as a sophomore also ranks 10th most amongst active players in the conference.
- Two active Kennesaw State student-athletes are currently in the A-Sun record books as junior forward Sametria Gideon ranks 42nd in career rebounds with 630, while junior guard Ashley Holliday is 17th for career three-pointers attempted with 465.
- Stetson’s Victoria McGowan - the A-Sun’s Preseason Player of the Year - is backing up her accolade by leading the conference in scoring (16.0 PPG), assists (4.4 APG) and steals (2.9 SPG). Her performance this season has helped Stetson to a 11-3 start. The nine non-conference wins are the most for the Hatters since the 2000-01 season.
- Three Jacksonville student-athletes have recorded double-doubles this season, which is the most by any team in the league. JU’s Crystal Bell, Tracie Sneed and Jade Cargill have each tallied double-doubles with Bell tallying two. Belmont’s Nelson leads the conference with four this season and 19 in her career.
- ETSU picked up its first win of the season on Dec. 20th against Morehead State. The Lady Bucs held the Eagles to .250 shooting from the field, which was a season-best. The previous-best was .283 against UAB in the second game of the season.
- After an 0-5 start, Mercer is 3-3 in its past six contests with victories against Troy, Belmont and High Point. The three wins this season already surpasses the Bears’ win total from last season.
- FGCU’s 28-point win against Virginia Tech on Dec. 21 marked the second victory for the Eagles against a BCS-level team this season (Michigan State; Nov. 19). Last season, the Eagles claimed three wins including against VT, Seton Hall and Indiana.
