This Week in Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball: Feb. 2nd

MACON, Ga. - Over the next week, nine Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball games are slated for play - all of which are conference games. All games, with the exception of two, can be seen on ASun.TV. USC Upstate at Kennesaw State will air at 7:00 p.m. tonight on ESPN3.com. Belmont at Lipscomb will also air on ESPN3.com at 7:30 p.m. CT Saturday.

Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Weekly Notes:

  • Tonight’s 7:00 p.m. USC Upstate at Kennesaw State match up will air on ESPN3.com. USC Upstate has defeated Kennesaw State in two of the last three outings, but the Owls won the last match up 74-63.
  • The last time out: Both the Owls and the Spartans had three players hit double-digit scoring, with the Owls Sametria Gideon snagging a double-double. The Owls also won the rebounding battle taking 50 of the 84 total rebounds in the game.
  • Saturday night’s 7:30 p.m. CT Belmont at Lipscomb game will air on ESPN3. Belmont has defeated Lipscomb in two of the last three outings.
  • The last time out: Three Belmont players scored in double-digits with Haley Nelson leading the trio with 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Lipscomb also put up impressive numbers with three players scoring in double-digits. The Bruins defeated the Bison 64-54.
  • Currently sitting with 47 wins over the last two years, FGCU is tied for 10th-best two-year run in A-Sun History. They need six more wins to take the top spot. Their total of 52 wins from 2009-11 is tied with FIU’s 1993-95 squad for best all-time.
  • FGCU continues to lead the league in scoring offense, 75.0, and scoring defense, 51.7. Stetson is second in scoring offense, 68.7, while North Florida is second in scoring defense allowing 61.7 points.
  • FGCU and Stetson appeared in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll again this week. The Eagles held steady at No. 3, Stetson also remained at No. 23. FGCU also received 14 votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll this week and eight votes in the Associated Press Poll.
  • Mercer leads the league in blocked shots with 92 on the season, an average of 4.2 per game. The Bears’ Alex Phillips is fourth in the league averaging 1.4 per game, Ry’van Buchanan is fifth with 1.3 per game and Alicia Williams averages 0.5 blocks per game.
  • USC Upstate is No. 8 in the nation, and leads the league, in free-throw percentage with 77.8 percent. Stetson is close behind at No. 12 in the nation and second in the league with 77.0 percent.
  • Kennesaw State’s Sametria Gideon leads the league in offensive rebounds with 77 on the season. Belmont’s Haley Nelson leads the league in total defensive rebounds with 145.

  • ETSU leads the league in rebounding offense with 42.9 rebounds per game. Jacksonville is close behind with 42.1 per game followed by Kennesaw State with 40.5.
  • Jacksonville leads the conference in steals with 251 on the season, averaging 11.4 per game. JU’s Crystal Bell ranks second in the conference averaging 2.7 SPG. Jade Cargill is close behind, ranking sixth with 2.1 SPG.
  • Brittany Kirkland needs 29 points to reach 1,500 career points. Only 23 student-athletes have accomplished this feat in the history of the A-Sun. Kirkland averages 12.3 PPG so she should hit this milestone within the next three games.
