• Belmont continued its reign atop the Atlantic Sun over the
weekend, despite two scares from ETSU and Kennesaw State. The Bruins extended
their win streak to 10 after holding off the Lady Bucs, 69-66, and the Owls,
86-75. The pair of wins extends Belmont's win streak at the Curb Event Center
to 20 games. • Also performing well were redshirt freshman Amber Rockwell, who
averaged 14.5 ppg, and rookie Tereva Moore, who averaged 10.5 ppg. Moore and
classmate Shaunda Strayhorn both went 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. Junior
Brooke Sunday shot 75 percent from the floor while sophomore Jessica Bobbitt
picked up 11 blocks over the stretch.
• Gardner-Webb recorded two wins last week, moving its conference
mark to 6-5 on the year. The Bulldogs, within a game of third place and two
out of second place, travel to ETSU and Kennesaw State this week. • GWU, which
has won a season-best three straight contests, has had a player post a double-double
in each of the last three games. • In the win over UNF, Shameka Smith became
the first GWU player (since moving to Division I) to score 1,000 points and
pull down 900 rebounds for a career.
• KSU had a rough week last week as the Lady Owls dropped to
3-6 on the road after losses at Lipscomb and Belmont. • The Lady Owls continue
to chase down loose balls as they lead the league in offensive rebounds at 17.86
per game.
• Junior point guard Catie Woods set a new career high with
22 points in the Lady Bisons 57-52 upset win over ETSU. She also tied her season-high
for 3-point shots made in a game with five. Woods leads the conference in 3-point
field goals made. • Senior center Penny Jones scored a career-high 22 points
in the ETSU. It was her first time to break the 20-point barrier with the Lady
Bisons. • Sophomore forward Jilian Partin set a new career high in points in
a game with 16 in the 68-57 win over Kennesaw State. She grabbed 11 rebounds
in the game, tying her career high. She leads the Lady Bisons with two double-doubles
this season.
• The Bears snapped their 16-game losing streak with a 66-56 win Sunday
against Stetson on the road. Mercer shot 66.7 percent in the second half while
holding Stetson to just 36 percent from the field. • Rhonda Owens and Chelsea
Seabron registered their first double-doubles in the win against Stetson. Owens
had 12 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Seabron added 12 points
while pulling down 10 boards. • Sally Skeldon had a career-best 12 assists in
the win, as the Bears converted 19 assists in the game. Ten of the assists came
in the deciding second half, when Mercer rallied from 13 to claim the 66-56
victory.
• UNF finished the week 1-1, making one of the toughest road trips
of the season, with games at Campbell and Gardner-Webb. UNF defeated Campbell
74-73 before dropping a tough fought game at Gardner-Webb 57-54. • Jennifer
Bowen scored a career high 28 points at Campbell before following that up with
18 at Gardner-Webb. Bowen has averaged 22 points in her last three outings,
putting together the three highest scoring outputs of her career. • UNF has
averaged at least 26 points in its last 11 halves of basketball and has scored
at least 70 points in two of its last three games.
• The Hatters took on conference opponent, the Mercer Bears
at the Edmunds Center. The Hatters seemed to have had the game handled going
into halftime with a 10 point lead, 29-19. But the Hatters could not keep up
the tempo in the second half, losing a 13 point lead with turnovers and foul
trouble. • The Bears began to chip away at the Hatter lead and jumped out to
their own lead of 11 points with 52 seconds remaining. They eventually took
the 66-56 win. • The Hatters were led by the efforts of senior Janene Maclin
with the game-high 14 points, and junior Kellie Olson with 13 points.
