Crosstown foes Jacksonville and UNF renew their rivalrly, known as the Rumble
on the River. Earlier in the season, Jacksonville walked away with at 56-42
victory. Ashley Williams scored a game-high 21 points in that outing. After
going 2-1 on the road, UNF is happy to be back home, where they are 3-3 this
season.
A-Sun Notables
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED What would basketball season be without upsets? Last week, three teams dramatically
changed face of the A-Sun race. On Thursday, Gardner-Webb snatched a 75-64 win
from third-ranked Jacksonville. Lipscomb took a 57-52 win from ETSU, who at
the time, had only been beaten by Belmont. In Sunday's regionally televised
game on CSS, Mercer went into Edmunds Arena and came away with their first conference
victory over Stetson. Mercer trailed by as many as 13 before shooting 66.7 percent
in the second half.
BLAZING TRAILS
Belmont sophomore Alysha Clark is just 20 points away from scoring 1,000 career
points. She also has 595 career rebounds. Over the weekend, she posted amazing
numbers, including a 31-point, 20-rebound effort against Kennesaw State. She
becomes the third player in A-Sun history to earn Player of the Week 10 times,
tying Mercer's Andrea Congreaves and FIU's Albena Branzova.
SETTING THE STANDARD Gardner-Webb's Shameka Smith became the first player to amass 1,000 points
and 900 rebounds in the school's Division-I era. Smith reached the 1,000 point
plateau on Jan. 25 against Belmont and pulled down her 900th board last week
against UNF. She curently has 1,038 points and 904 rebounds.
