Mercer Hands Belmont First A-Sun Loss of the Season

MACON, Ga. – In a game reminiscent of a boxing match, the Mercer women’s basketball
team pulled off the upset against undefeated Atlantic Sun leader Belmont, snapping
an 11 game conference win streak. The Bears rallied from a 12-point deficit
in the second half for a 69-65 win over the Bruins.
Belmont (17-5, 11-1 A-Sun) held a 59-47 lead with 6:56 left to play and it
seemed that the Bruins had put the Bears away en route to another victory. However,
Mercer (3-19, 2-9 A-Sun) held Belmont scoreless for the next 3:42 while Chelsea
Seabron scored six points in the Bears’ 11-0 run that cut the deficit to one,
59-58.
A pair of free throws from Brooke Sunday and a jumper from Tereva Moore gave
Belmont a five-point lead, but Mercer battled back. Megan delaRosa tied the
game on a 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining, but a Belmont turnover set delaRosa
up to hit the go-ahead shot with 28.2 ticks remaining.
Belmont committed two costly turnovers on its next two possessions, failing
to get a shot off in the final 83 seconds of the game. Rhonda Owens sealed the
deal for Mercer, sinking a pair of free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining.
The Bruins were without the services of starters Alysha Clark and Shaunda Strayhorn.
