Belmont dropped its first game in 12 tries to open its weekend
road trip but rebounded in the second game to finish at .500 for the stretch.
The Bruins fell 69-65 to Mercer on Thursday and dominated Stetson, 72-56, on
Saturday. Redshirt freshman Amber Rockwell scored a career-high 20 points
against the Bears, including five three pointers. Against the Hatters, senior
Destri Bockey drilled a career-high 21 points. Tereva Moore contributed 13 points
in the effort. Belmont returns to action on Saturday as they host Lipscomb
in part two of the Battle of the Boulevard. The game, which will be broadcast
on CSS.
Marlena Murphy turned in her 10th and 11 double-doubles of the season,
despite a pair of tough road losses for the Lady Camels. Adrienne Rieley scored
a career-high 23 points in the loss at Kennesaw State. Campbell wraps up its
home schedule this week before playing its final three games on the road.
The Lady Camels are one loss away from tying the school record of 19 set in
2002-03.
The Lady Bucs got back on track this past week as they defeated
Gardner-Webb and Campbell. ETSU is 11-0 this season when they score at least
70 points. The Lady Bucs have also won 10 of their last 13 games, including
five straight at home. Michele DeVault averaged 17.5 ppg in the two wins this
week, and is averaging 17.0 ppg in three games against Campbell. Brooke Wilhoit
has drained at least one three-pointer in 22 consecutive games, while the Lady
Bucs have made on in 70 straight contests.
The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team dropped two tough
games last week on the road to ETSU and Kennesaw State. Shameka Smith averaged
a double-double for the week. The Bulldogs are back in action this weekend
in Paul Porter Arena as they play host to Stetson Thursday night and Mercer
Saturday afternoon.
With a victory over UNF on Feb. 10, the Dolphins set a new
program record with 14 wins surpassing previous mark of 13-15 in 2000-01.
At 8-4 in the A-Sun, JU is two wins shy of setting program record for conference
wins in a season, surpassing the previous mark of 9-9 in 2000-01. JU currently
leads the A-Sun in turnover margin (+2.77) and is 48 steals shy of surpassing
the program record of 262 steals which was set last season.
The Lady Owls have won two straight games for the second
time this season. Kennesaw State has not won three consecutive games since becoming
a Division I program and joining the Atlantic Sun Conference. With the win
over Gardner-Webb on Saturday, the Lady Owls have doubled their win-total from
a year ago. In that game sophomore guard Jennifer Baker scored 23 points,
her career high. The 18-point win was the second-largest margin of victory this
season for KSU. The Lady Owls downed Winthrop by 26 earlier this season.
Sophomore forward Rachel Davis scored a career-high and a
game-high 15 points in a 58-49 loss at Mercer. Davis scored 10 points in a 59-57
win at Stetson to average 12.5 points for the week, almost triple her 4.9 ppg
average for the season. The Lady Bisons ended a three-game Atlantic Sun winning
streak with the loss at Mercer. The win at Stetson was the first road victory
of the season. The Lady Bisons take the short trip down the boulevard Saturday
night to face Belmont in the "Battle of the Boulevard" on CSS television.
For the second straight season, Mercer swept Belmont and Lipscomb
in Macon. The Bears upended previously undefeated Belmont 69-65 Thursday and
beat Lipscomb 58-49 Saturday. Sally Skeldon recorded her 500th career assist
in Thursdays game. The dish came on Erin Kellers 3-pointer at the 5:08 mark
of the first half. The senior has 510 assists entering this week, needing nine
more to move into 11th place in the Atlantic Sun record book.
UNF finished the week 0-2, making its first appearance against an
ACC team with a trip to Virginia, falling to the Cavaliers on the road. The
Lady Ospreys followed that game up with a loss to cross-town rival Jacksonville
in a SunTrust River City Rumble matchup. Jennifer Bowen scored in double figures
in both games and has now scored in double figures in six-straight contests
UNF will remain at home this week when it hosts Kennesaw State and East Tennessee
State.
