Belmont Rookie Earns Fourth POTW Honor
Date Posted: 2/20/2006 Macon, Ga. -- Belmont's Alysha Clark scored her 13th double-double of the season and was today named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for the fourth time by the conference office.Her consistency led to the Bruins taking two wins over Kennesaw State and ETSU. Clark avaraged 22 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocks for the week. Clark scored 22 of Belmont's 37 first half points against Kennesaw State last week, en route to picking up her 13th double-double season. She finished that game with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Two days later, she led the charge against ETSU, coming away with a game-high 16 points and fell just one rebound short of another double-double. Clark shot a whopping 73.9 percent from the floor, including going 12-for-16 against KSU, and a blazing 90.9 percent from the free throw line, missing only one of 11 attempts over the two contests. The Bruins will be back in action when they take on Jacksonville, Saturday at 1 p.m. The Atlantic Sun Conference announces the Player of the Week every Monday during the 2005-06 women's basketball campaign. The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida and Stetson. Other Top Performers Marlena Murphy, CAM (So. - F - Fayetteville, N.C. - Undecided) -- Murphy picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Lady Camels 68-58 road victory over Mercer. The win propelled Campbell into the A-Sun Tournament for the first time in three years and gave Lady Camels head coach Wanda Watkins her 400th victory. Candace Gibson, ETSU (So. - F - Warner Robins, Ga. - Physical Education) -- Gibson posted a career-high 28 points in the win over Lipscomb, including 22 in the second half and shot 14-for-22 from the field (.636). She also tallied three blocks and three steals against the Lady Bisons. She pulled down a total 20 rebounds on the week, including a game-high 13 against Belmont. Candyse Kelly, GWU (So. - G - Mableton, Ga. - Business Adminstration) -- Kelly led GWU to its first A-Sun Tournament berth since joining the league in 2002-2003 by scoring a team-high 16 points in a 77-74 win at Mercer. Kelly averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 83.3 percent from beyond the arc in two games. Nefertiti Walker, STET (Sr. - G - Augusta, Ga. - Business) -- Walker tallied a game-high 26 points along with three assists and three steals. She also tied her career-high with six three-pointers for the game. She then led all scorers with 29 points in Stetson's 64-50 win against Campbell Saturday afternoon. Walker also had five treys, four rebounds and three assists for the day.  |
