MACON, Ga. -- Campbell runner Alicia Valtin overcame soggy course conditions
to finish first in a field of 42 competitors at the Campbell Classic over the
weekend. She was named Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week today by the conference
office.
Valtin posted a time of 14:46 in the 4K race, winning for the second consecutive
year. She finished 24 seconds ahead of the next finisher, and has won five of
the last eight meets entered. Valtin also holds the 5K course record in Buies
Creek and the A-Sun championship record.
The Sanford, N.C. native was named Runner of the Year last season, is a three-time
All-Atlantic Sun selection and the 2002 Freshman of the Year. She is majoring
in Elementary Education. This is marks her fourth career Athlete of the Week
nod.
Valtin and the Camels will be back in action Friday, Sept. 8 at the UNC Wilmington
Invitational.
The Atlantic Sun Conference announces the Athlete of the Week every Wednesday
during the 2006 cross country season.
The 10-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., includes Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida
and Stetson, with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate to compete in 2007.
