MACON, Ga. - Paced by senior Deborah Jones' fourth-place, the Mercer University women's cross country team finished first out of 20 teams as the Bears hosted the Mercer Invitational Saturday morning on the grounds of the Georgia Children's Home.
Jones' time of 19:43 in the 5k event was her best of the 2007 campaign and helped propel the Bears to the top spot in the event.
"I am obviously glad we won," said Mercer head coach Ryan Bailey. "The ladies ran well and we defeated some teams that are traditionally very strong. Today was a step forward for us."
The squad turned in a strong performance as a whole, with senior Brittany Clark recording a seventh-place finish, while freshman Whitney Hall also turned in a top-10 performance, placing 10th.
Another freshman, Clara Densmore placed 12th and cross country newcomer Chereese Rowe finished in the 20th spot. The trio of Carly Souther, Leah Stowers and Jeanette Crawford finished 33rd, 34th and 35th respectively.
