DEBARY, Fla. - Alejandra Shaw fired a three-under par 69 to help vault Campbell to the top of both the individual and team leaderboards on the first day of the Atlantic Sun Championship at DeBary Golf & Country Club.
Shaw's dominating performance gives the junior a commanding six stroke advantage over second place Ashley Barton of ETSU after just 18 holes of play. The Vina del Mar, Chile native committed just one bogey on a day when the course surrendered just one score of par or better and only 12 rounds better than 80. Shaw took advantage of the par five’s, registering three birdies. Her three-under par 69 is the best opening round score in A-Sun Championship history and is the second lowest 18-hole total in the 17-year history of the event. Erica Wein of Georgia State shot a record 68 in the second round of the 2004 Championship.
As a team, Campbell grabbed an early four stroke advantage with a score of 312, four strokes better than their scheduled Tuesday playing partners Gardner-Webb and Mercer. Stacey Linduska carded five birdies on day one, the most by any player on her way to a team leading 78 for the Bulldogs whose best finish at the A-Sun Championship is an eighth place showing last season. Three Mercer players stand in the top-10 paced by Nicole Roche who is fourth after shooting a 77.
Play resumes tomorrow with the first group teeing off at 7:44 am.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.
