DEBARY, Fla. - Campbell extended its lead to 10 strokes during the second round of play at the 2006 Atlantic Sun Championship held at DeBary Golf & Country Club.
The Camels shot a 310, matching second place ETSU for the lowest team score of the day. Junior Alejandra Shaw maintained a comfortable lead after carding a three-over par 75 on Tuesday despite battling consistently strong winds that swept across the course. She leads ETSU's Ashley Barton by five strokes heading into the final round after Barton, along with Campbell's Sofia Gorelik, posted the day's lowest score with a 74. Only Barton stands within 10 strokes of Shaw setting up an exciting final round as the duo are paired together in the last group of the day.
Shaw leads the tournament in scoring on both the par 3 and par 5 holes this week, combining to go six-under par on those eight holes over two days. Her seven birdies are also the most by any player at the championship. Shaw is aiming to become the first Camel to win medalist honors since 2000 and the fifth in conference history. As a team, Campbell is looking to add to its conference record six team titles on Wednesday.
ETSU improved by 12 strokes during the second round to jump from fifth place to second. The Buccaneers matched tournament leader Campbell with a 310 on Tuesday. Three ETSU players stand in the top-10 led by the remarkably consistent Barton who has carded 26 pars to post a two-day total of 149. Florida Atlantic and Lipscomb also each lowered their team scores during the second round.
Rounding out the top-five with Shaw and Barton are Natalia Giraldo of ETSU, Sofia Gorelik of Campbell and Jessica Green of Jacksonville. Play concludes tomorrow with the first group teeing off at 7:44 am.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.
