MACON, Ga. – Campbell’s Alejandra Shaw capped her steady three year climb in the Atlantic Sun Conference with A-Sun Player of the Year honors as the league office distributed its annual postseason women’s golf awards.
Campbell’s John Crooks received the Coach of the Year nod from his peers after leading the Camels to their record seventh conference title in the last 11 years. Florida Atlantic’s Praewnapa Phol-Uayporn rode a strong finish at the conference championship at DeBary Golf & Country Club to Freshman of the Year accolades.
Shaw led the A-Sun Championship wire-to-wire after posting the lowest first round score in conference championship history with her three-under par 69 on day one. She would go on to win the event by four strokes, posting her third top-10 finish in as many appearances. The Vina del Mar, Chile native also received her second April Golfer of the Month recognition after capturing medalist honors at the A-Sun Championship. The junior will have an opportunity to join an elite group of players that have posted four top-10 finishes at the championship. Only eight other student-athletes have accomplished that goal and just one since 2001.
Campbell senior Sofia Gorelik gave the Camels a pair of players on the first team. Gorelik becomes only the second player in A-Sun history to earn first team all-conference honors four times. Her fourth place finish at the A-Sun Championship gave the Tandil, Argentina native six top-10 finishes during her final season in Buies Creek. Conference tournament runner-up Ashley Barton gave ETSU a first team representative in their first season in the A-Sun. The senior finished second in two of her last three events.
In addition to Freshman of the Year honors, Phol-Uayporn also landed on the All-Atlantic Sun first team. Her 75.96 scoring average just edged out Shaw for the best mark in the A-Sun this season. The Bangkok, Thailand native has finished runner-up three times this season and posted top-3 finishes in three of her last four events. Teammate June Bolme, a sophomore, joins her on the first team. Bolme won the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate in late March, edging out Phol-Uayporn.
Campbell and ETSU each placed one player on the second team as well: Maite Ortiz de Pinedo (CAM) and Natalia Giraldo (ETSU). Junior Claudine Foong gave Gardner-Webb their first all-conference player since joining the league in 2003 while standout freshman Lorie Warren was Belmont’s first All-Atlantic Sun player as well. Mercer senior Ashley Harris rounds out the second team after earning the honor for the third straight season. Phol-Uayporn and Warren headline the All-Freshmen Team as well as the pair are joined by Katie Garahan (GWU), Lucy Gould (ETSU) and Anna Hill (MER).
