ETSU, Jansone Enter Final Day Up Single Shot

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Several players capitalized on better scoring conditions on Tuesday to make big moves in the second round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Golf Championship, highlighted by ETSU who turned a one-stroke deficit into a one-stroke advantage at Venetian Bay Golf Club.

Senior Sinead O’Sullivan led off for the Buccaneers and fired a 2-under par 70 in the second round posting the team’s low round of the day. As a squad, the Buccaneers combined to post a score of 3-over par 291. Laura Jansone stayed steady in her quest for a second Atlantic Sun Conference individual title, culminating her 1-over par 73 with a birdie at the 18th hole to maintain a one-stroke advantage after 36 holes.

While ETSU remained consistent, Kennesaw State and Campbell posted the day’s best rounds. The Owls matched the conference single-round record with their even-par round of 288. Ket Premchuen (2-under 70) and Jordan Lazenby (1-under 71) each broke par to help Kennesaw State vault into the championship’s final groups on Wednesday and leave the duo just one shot behind Jansone in the race for the medalist honor. Both players struggled on the par-3 third hole with the freshman Premchuen taking a bogey and the senior Lazenby battling through a double bogey. However, after that hiccup, each played the final 15 holes at three-under par. Kennesaw State trails leader ETSU by just a single stroke heading into the final 18 holes.

Tuesday proved to be a new day for Campbell’s Sarah Bejgrowicz. In the first round, the junior bogeyed her first four holes and seven all told. In the second round, Bejgrowicz turned in a bogey-free card that included four birdies. Her 4-under par 68, one stroke off the A-Sun Championship’s single-round scoring record, took the Lancaster, Pa., native from a tie for 25th after the first day to a spot by herself in sixth place heading into the final round. The Lady Camels shot a two-over par 290 to move into third place, just five strokes off the lead.

Local favorite Alexandria Buelow of the host Stetson Hatters shot her second straight even-par round to stand in fourth place while Briana Carlson of FGCU carded a 1-over par 73 for first-round leader FGCU to claim fifth place. The Eagles could not quite keep pace with the hot shooting front-runners despite posting a very respectable team total of 298, slipping six shots behind ETSU in fourth place

Final round play begins at 8:00am on Wednesday morning with teams starting on both No. 1 and No. 10 at Venetian Bay Golf Club.  Follow all the action at GolfStat.com.
