#ASunWGolf: Mercer, FGCU begin spring season on Monday

MIAMI, Fla. - The Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast women’s golf teams open the A-Sun spring 2013 season Monday at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami at the Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club.

The 54-hole event is contested over two days, with today's practice round preceding 36 holes of competition on Monday. On Tuesday, the tournament concludes with an 18-hole round and an awards presentation.

Joining Mercer and FGCU and host No. 77 Miami in the field are No. 28 Baylor, No. 89 Boston College, No. 26 Campbell, Daytona State College, Georgetown, No. 88 Iowa, James Madison, No. 91, Longwood, No. 95 Middle Tennessee, No. 57 Minnesota, No. 11 Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts and No. 37 Texas State.

Based on order of team qualifying, Mercer's lineup will consist of sophomore Sarah Louie Brown, junior Mary Alice Murphy, senior Aurelie Wiriath, junior Lacey Fears and senior Kaitlin Marrin. Fears claimed her fifth career individual title in the fall at the LPGA/Xavier Invitational and also finished second at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate, while Murphy finished second at the Terrier Intercollegiate hosted by Wofford. Fears was also a two-time A-Sun Women;s Golfer of the Week (9/26, 10/17).

The Bears are currently ranked No. 103 in the latest Golfstat rankings and No. 106 by GolfWeek. Mercer finished in the top five of each of its four tournaments in the fall, including a win at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate in which it hosted at the Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Ga. Pine Lakes is also the site of the 2013 A-Sun Championship.

FGCU's top five players in stroke average from the fall included Georgia Price (76.44), Mei Khuan Pong (77.50), Kristen Swindell (77.89), Megan Van Etten (79.67) and Sara Detlefsen (80.00). Price claimed the individual title at the Courtyard Classic in a three-hole playoff and recorded another top-10 finish to pace FGCU in the fall. Price also earned A-Sun Women's Golfer of the Week honors on 10/24. The Eagles recorded two top-five finishes in their four fall tournaments and are ranked No. 143 by Golfstat and No. 142 by GolfWeek.
