#ASUNWGOLF: Fears, Viera Into US WAPL Match Play

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. – Mercer's Lacey Fears and Stetson's Mallory Viera advanced into the match play rounds of the US Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Tuesday, as Fears is currently tied for 17th and Viera is tied for 45th.

Fears carded rounds of 72 and 75 for a total of 147 (+3), while Viera rebounded from her first-round 78 to post a one-over-par 73 for a total of 151 (+7). Fears, a rising senior at Mercer University, made a hole-in-one at the 166-yard, par-3 second hole. It was the first ace recorded at the Women’s Amateur Public Links since Mary Matson did so at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., in 2009.

Viera also continues to build on the momentum from her win at the 84th Florida State Women’s Amateur Championship in Vero Beach last week.

Her former Stetson teammate, Lauren Cate, is also tied with Fears in 17th after having posted identical scores.

Other A-Sun golfers who did not finish inside the cut line of 153 (+9) included Kennesaw State's Kaew Preamchuen and Stetson's Sammi Smith. Preamchuen (78-77/155, +11) placed in a tie for 77th and although Smith shot a 74 on Tuesday she couldn't overcome her first round score of 82 to finish in a tie for 87th with a total of 156.

The 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying followed by six rounds of match play, with the championship scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Saturday. Match play begins on Wednesday.

It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
