KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) – fresh off the first individual championship in ETSU women’s golf history at last week’s Lady Pirate Intercollegiate – led the Bucs once again Tuesday, firing a career best and matching the ETSU record for single round score with a 3-under-par 69 in the final round of the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Oak Point Golf Club.
Jansone posted a score of even-par 216 for the three-round event, finishing in second place and just two strokes off the pace of individual champion Steffi Kirchmayr from College of Charleston. As a team, Jansone and the Bucs made quite a statement, placing second behind Atlantic Sun Conference rival Campbell on the team leaderboard but ending the event in front of nine other teams that entered the tournament ahead of ETSU in the national rankings.
Most notably, the Bucs fired a team score of 889, marking the third time in six events this fall that the team has reached that low score, which ranks as the best three-round score in the program’s history.
“This was the toughest field we’ve faced so far this year and to beat many of those teams is great for our players and our program,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Reynolds, whose team finished ahead of teams such as Louisville, Miami, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Iowa State, Indiana, Wisconsin and Maryland. “I can’t say enough about Laura and the way she’s playing right now. She’s really finding her game and a 69 is just an incredible score.
