ST. GEORGE, UTAH – Campbell finished 13th after Saturday’s final round of the NCAA West Regional women’s golf championship at Entrada at Snow Canyon. Oklahoma State and Stanford tied for team honors, while the top eight schools in the 21-team field, plus the top two individuals earned a berth in the NCAA Championship, May 22-25 at Daytona Beach, Fla.
Campbell finished the event at 922 strokes following Saturday’s 309. Eighth-place New Mexico gained the final national tournament berth with a 908, one stroke better than San Jose State. Oklahoma State and Stanford both finished at 874 on the par-71 Entrada at Snow Canyon layout, while third-place Arizona State was two strokes behind.
Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State won individual honors by five strokes, carding a 7-under 206 (68-68-70) in the 54-hole event. Anna Nordqvist of Arizona State produced Saturday’s low round of four-under 67 to finish second at even-par 213.
Kay Hoey of Long Beach State, who tied for 10th at 220, and Kelly Nakashima of Idaho, who tied for 15th-place at 222 strokes, earned the two individual qualifying spots in the NCAA Championship.
Campbell junior Maite Ortiz de Pinedo was the team’s low individual, tying for 34th-place at 14-over 227 (73-77-77). Senior Alejandra Shaw, the two-time Atlantic Sun player of the year and conference tournament champion, closed out her collegiate career by tying for 37th place (78-73-77—228).
Camel freshmen Belen Diaz Cisneros and Mary Mattson tied for 58th place (234 strokes) in the 108-player field. Junior Emily Simpson tied for 98th (91-79-82—252).
Campbell was making its 10th NCAA regional appearance in the last 11 years and 13th in the 16-year tenure of head coach John Crooks. CU won five tournaments during the 2006-07 season, including its record eighth Atlantic Sun Conference title.
