Five A-Sun Women's Golfers Earn National Academic Award

Date Posted: 7/11/2007

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida – The National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Teams for Division I, II & III were announced on Monday, with a total of 368 women’s collegiate golfers recognized with this prestigious honor. Five student-athletes from Atlantic Sun schools made the Division I team. Four women from East Tennessee State, along with Belmont sophomore Lauren Oeser comprised the Atlantic Sun’s representation on the team.

From ETSU, sophomore Laura Jansone, junior Lucy Gould, and seniors Maria Ringdahl and Natalia Giraldo made the All-American team. Jansone was the Atlantic Sun’s 2007 Freshman of the Year and a First-team All-Atlantic Sun member. Giraldo and Gould both were named to 2007 Second Team All-Atlantic Sun squad.

“I am extremely proud of the team for once again averaging above a 3.5 cumulative GPA this year,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Reynolds. “To have four of six team members selected to the All-Scholar team is quite an accomplishment. They should be very proud of each other for this achievement individually and as a team.”

The Buccaneers’ overall team grade point average of 3.54 ranked among the nation’s top 25 squads.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

The National Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women’s collegiate golf coaches. The NGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the NGCA represents over 400 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
