OOTLEWAH, Tenn. - Belmont's Lorie Warren capped off a week of great golf by capturing the Tennessee Women's Amateur Golf Championship Friday afternoon at The Honors Course.
Warren, a Hendersonville native, defeated 15-year old Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City in the championship match Friday 4 & 2.
The championship match started well for Warren as she birdied the first hole to take a 1-up lead. That lead held until the sixth hole when Martindale birdied while Warren bogeyed to square the match even. The next four holes both players went back and forth, Warren would take a one hole lead and then Martindale would square the match on the next hole.
At the 11th hole, Warren birdied the par-5 to take the 1-up lead and then extended her lead to 3-up with wins on the next two holes. At the 14th hole, Martindale hit her approach to the green to five feet, but Warren drained a 30-foot birdie putt to deny Martindale any momentum. The match ended on the 16th hole when Warren's 12-foot birdie found the bottom of the hole.
This win gives Warren her second Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) title. She won the TGA Girls Junior Championship in 2004. In addition, Warren becomes the first Belmont female golfer to win a State Amateur title.
