Hatters in 19th After Day One of NCAA Regionals

GAINESVILLE, Fla. The Stetson University women's golf team completed it's first ever round in an NCAA Regional with a 309 (+29) and stands in a tie for 19th place with the University of Central Florida.

Stetson is competing in the NCAA East Regional at the University of Florida’s Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville. The Hatters earned their bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing the program’s first Atlantic Sun Conference championship on April 15 at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, the team’s home course. The top eight teams in the regional (54-hole tournament) will advance to the national championships along with the top two individuals in each regional from non-advancing teams.

Freshman Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) led the way for the Hatters shooting a three over par 73 and currently stands five strokes off the lead and in a tie for 23rd place. Junior Lauren Darnell is in a tie for the 51st position after shooting a 6 over par 76 in her hometown.

Cate, the A-Sun Championship runner-up, had a bit of a rough start with a bogey on the first hole, and another on the par-5 seventh. She recovered one shot with a birdie on the par-3 eighth and made the turn at +1. After bogeys on three of the first four holes on the back nine, she did finish strong with her second birdie of the round coming on the 18th. Darnell carded four bogeys on the front and another three on the back. Her lone birdie came on the par-5 12th hole.
