MACON, Ga. - In the opening week of the 2011-12 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Season, USC Upstate's Carolyne Chelulei and ETSU's Kelly Monteleone came away with the A-Sun weekly awards. Chelulei posted the program record in the 1,000m run at the Orange & Purple Winter Classic, while Monteleone placed third and fourth respectively in the long and triple jump.
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Carolyne Chelulei, USC Upstate (Sr. – Distance – Eldoret, Kenya – Non-Profit Administration)
- First Career Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Honor; Program's Second Award
- Broke program record in 1,000-meter run at Orange & Purple Winter Classic
- Her time of 3:02.38 earned first place in the event
- Claimed third place in the 200m dash in 22.48
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Alicia Whittle (Fr., Kennesaw State) – Helped set program record in 4x400m relay (3:55.76)
- Karissa Bertling (Fr., ETSU) – Placed third and fifth respectively in 55m (7.13) and 400m (59.13) events
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Kelly Monteleone, ETSU (Jr. – Jumps – Pittsburgh, Pa.)
- First Career Field Athlete of the Week award
- Finished third in long jump; fourth in triple jump at Appalachian Collegiate Indoor
- Leapt to 5.51 in long jump and followed with 11.71m in triple
- Ranks second in A-Sun in long jump; and first in triple jump
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Breana Kwasnik (Fr., USC Upstate) – Broke school record in pole vault at height of 3.35m
