BOONE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb ran its opponents’ scoreless streak to 206:36 over three matches to open the 2005 season before Whitney Southard gave Appalachian State a 1-0 advantage. The Mountaineers would tack on another tally just seven minutes later and hold on to top GWU by a 2-0 margin.
The loss is Gardner-Webb’s first of the year, dropping the Lady Bulldogs to 2-1. Appalachian State moves to 1-1 with the victory.
With the score knotted at zeroes, ASU’s Dana Murphy lifted a corner kick in front of Gardner-Webb’s goal. Whitney Southard pounced on the deflection and fired a shot past Corinne Razem at the 26:36 mark for the first goal of the match.
The Apps added an insurance goal just under seven minutes later on another Murphy corner. This time ASU’s Casey Cleary redirected Murphy’s pass into the back of the net for her first career goal.
That was all the scoring that either side allowed, as Liz McCutcheon and Razem each played the full 90 minutes and collected five saves.
Leeanna Woodworth led Gardner-Webb’s offense by putting three of her match-high seven shots on goal. Brittany Woods added two shots and Angie Harvey, Laura Dickson, Elicia Morris, Cristin Yasinsac and Tiffany Greene each had one shot.
Murphy paced ASU with her two assists, providing helpers for Southard and Cleary. In all, ten Appalachian State players recorded at least one shot.
Gardner-Webb (2-1) will try to right the ship on Tuesday with it plays host to UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
