Woodworth and Marek Tabbed A-Sun Players of the Week

Date Posted: 9/26/2005

Macon, Ga. – Gardner-Webb’s Leanna Woodworth and Kennesaw State’s Jessica Marek received Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office.

Leanna Woodworth earned her fifth career Offensive Player of the Week nod. The reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year excelled with a record-breaking performance in GWU’s conference opening, 4-1, win at Stetson. Woodworth scored twice, including the game-winning tally, and assisted a third Bulldog goal en route to eclipsing Gardner-Webb’s all-time scoring record of 113 career points set by Kristen Lott (1992-1995). Woodworth finished the match with five points, moving her into first-place all-time in Gardner-Webb’s record books with 114. The Virginia Beach, Va., senior added to her record on Saturday as she assisted GWU’s lone goal in the 2-1 overtime loss at Mercer. For the week ,Woodworth played a part in four of GWU’s five scores, registering six points in two matches with two goals and two helpers. Woodworth now sits atop Gardner-Webb’s all-time scoring list with 115 points and is also the school’s all-time leading assist artist with 33. The forward is currently tied for second in career goals with 41, just eight shy of Lott’s record of 49. Woodworth is a Sports Management major

Jessica Marek continues to rack up weekly honors in her first year in the A-Sun, capturing her third Defensive Player of the Week honor. Marek ran her consecutive scoreless minutes streak to 671 with shutouts of UNF and Jacksonville over the weekend. Kennesaw State’s victory over UNF gave the Owls their first Atlantic Sun victory while the pair of wins make them one of only three unbeaten teams in the league after one weekend of play. Marek has not allowed a goal since surrendering four in the season opener at Clemson and ran her career total to 33 shutouts.

The Atlantic Sun Conference hands out offensive and defensive Player of the Week awards weekly during the 2005 women’s soccer campaign.
