Belmont Falls to Evansville in Season Opener

Friday, August 26, 2005

Evansville, Ind.- Despite being the first team on scoreboard, the Belmont Bruins (0-1-0, 0-0-0 A Sun) dropped their first regular season game of the 2005 season to the University of Evansville Purple Aces 3-1 (1-0-0) Friday night.

Bruin forward Kassidy Brown (Franklin, Tenn.) was quick to get the Bruins on the scoreboard. She headed the ball into past UE goalkeeper, Whitney Raeon, with just 4:57 off the clock. She scored off of a corner kick from sophomore Sarah Brandt (Hendersonville, Tenn.).

Belmont seemed in control until 51:18 when their chances of winning became turned into Evanville’s Grey. Sophomore midfielder Heidi Grey netted the first two goals for the Purple Aces. Freshman forward, Keshia Malone scored the final goal for the Purple Aces at 84: 42.

“We played a decent first half,” Bruin coach Lisa Howe said. “We got off to a decent start in the second half. We ended the game well, however, there was a 30 minute time period where we leaned back on our heels and gave up goals.”

Despite giving up three goals, the coaching staff was still impressed with the play of sophomore goalkeeper Micaela Crowley (Hoover, Ala).

“Micaela was tested a lot, and she did very well,” Howe said.

The Bruins will next take on Sewanee in an exhibition at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Whitten Soccer Complex.
