Saturday, August 20, 2005 HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women’s soccer team handed High Point a 2-0 loss in a preseason tuneup on Saturday night. The Bulldogs got goals from Leeanna Woodworth and Brittany Woods in the victory. Woodworth, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, broke the scoreless tie with 7:56 remaining in the opening half as she headed home a cross from the left side off the foot of freshman midfielder Angie Harvey. Gardner-Webb took the 1-0 lead into the half and added an insurance tally at the 82:40 mark when sophomore Brittany Woods’ shot from the top of the box found the back of the net for a 2-0 GWU advantage. Gardner-Webb’s defense held High Point in check for the entire 90 minutes, limiting the Lady Panthers to just six shots on goal. Sophomore Corinne Razem anchored the Bulldog defense with three first half saves while freshman keeper Sara Wyszynski also stopped three shots during her 45 minutes of second half work. The Bulldogs will officially begin their 2005 campaign with a game against Southeast Missouri State at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Austin Peay Lady Govs Invitational. Gardner-Webb will also play Austin Peay on Sunday at 4 p.m. before coming home to host Winthrop on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. |
