Owls travel to No. 18 Georgia in A-Sun Game of the Week

MACON, Ga. - This week’s Atlantic Sun Game of the Week is conference preseason favorite Kennesaw State against South Eastern Conference power No. 18 Georgia. The Owls feature three players on the Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference team led by preseason player of the year Maylee Attin-Johnson. Georgia has made it to the SEC tournament in each of the past two seasons and qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2007 as a No. 3 seed. The Bulldogs are led by unanimous preseason All-SEC selection Carrie Patterson. This is the second consecutive season Patterson has been named to the SEC preseason All-Conference team.

Key Match up
* The match up that is the must watch during this game is between the Bulldogs’ Forward Carrie Patterson and the Owls’ Defenseman Bridget Gaughan. Both are on their respectives of the their preseason All-Conference teams. 

Players to Watch
* Maylee Attin-Johnson, Kennesaw State - Redshirted the 2008 but did compete internationally scoring twice against Costa Rica.

* Caitlin Dingle, Kennesaw State - Redshirted the 2008 after earning first team All-Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007 and being named the Most Valuable Player of the A-Sun Tournament.

Belmont


* Picked as the preseason conference champion by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

* Is the defending conference tournament champion. The Bruins claimed the conference crown with a win over Stetson followed by shoot out wins against Kennesaw State and Mercer.

* Junior Jessica Rix was one of three unanimous selections to the A-Sun Pre-Season All-Conference team. Rix was a first team all-league performer a season ago.

* Belmont was picked fourth in the preseason coaches poll after a fourth-place regular season finish in 2008.

Campbell    

* The Camels fell in their only exhibition match, 4-0 to Wake Forest.

* Campbell was picked ninth in the preseason coaches poll after a ninth-place finish in 2008.

* The 10th win that Campbell has in conference play this season is the already the sixth most in school history

* Top returning scorer Kaili Terry posted seven points in 2008 will serve as the team captain in ‘09.

ETSU

* The Lady Bucs posted a 5-0 exhibition win over King College on Aug. 18 with Jordan Monty recording a hat trick.

* ETSU opens the season with a non-conference match up against the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on Saturday.

* Sophomore Jordan Monty was one of three unanimous selections to the A-Sun Pre-Season All-Conference team.

FGCU

* FGCU opens the season against in-state rival UCF in Orlando, Fla. The Eagles follow that game with a trip to Coral Gables, Fla. to take on the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday. 

* The Eagles posted a 0-0 tie in the their only exhibition on Aug. 16 against Rollins.

* Lindsay Haw is the sole representative of the FGCU on the preseason all-conference team. The junior forward led the Eagles last season in goals, assists, points and game winning goals.

Jacksonville

* The Dolphins travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Florida State in their season opener.

* Jacksonville was picked to finish fifth in the A-Sun in the preseason coaches poll. During the preseason the Dolphins posted a 2-0 loss to USF in Tampa.

* Jessica Hurtado a Jacksonville sophomore mid-fielder was one of three unanimous preseason all-conference selections. Hurrado was a second-team all-conference performer a season and was second on the dolphins is assists and third in goals.

Kennesaw State

* The Kennesaw State enters the 2009 A-Sun season as the conference favorite in the conference preseason coaches poll. The Owls finished second in the A-Sun a season ago but fell to Belmont in the conference tournament. 

* The Owls open the season with a trip to Athens, Ga. to take on Georgia. The game is the Atlantic Sun Game of the Week.

* Kennesaw State is led by Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year Maylee Attin-Johnson. Joining Attin-Johnson on the Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference team from the Owls is defenseman Bridget Gaughan and forward Caitlin Dingle.

Lipscomb

* Lipscomb was picked to finish 10th in the A-Sun preseason coaches poll after a 10th-place finish in 2008.

* The Bison return their top scorer from a season ago in Kate Spellman. She posted four goals and six assists in 20 starts a season ago. Lipscomb also returns it leading goal scorer in Hallie Proffitt.

* The biggest question mark for the Bison this season will have to be in net as they will go with a pair of freshman keepers.

Mercer

* Mercer opens the season at home with a non-conference matchup with Jacksonville State. The Bears went 2-0 in the preseason with exhibition wins over Georgia College & State and Alabama.

* The Bears were picked second in the A-Sun preseason coaches poll. After winning the regular season conference title a season ago.

* Mercer put three squad members on the A-Sun preseason team, goal keeper Jean Worts, defenseman Kacie Hudson and mid-fielder Olivia Tucker.

UNF

* The University of North Florida is picked to finish eighth in the A-Sun preseason coaches poll after the Lady Ospreys finish 2008 in the same position.

* UNF played the University of Tampa to a 0-0 tie in it only exhibition match up of the preseason.

* The Lady Ospreys leading goal scorer from a season ago Katelin Swift. She was voted the A-Sun Player of the Week on Aug. 28 of last season.

USC Upstate

* The match up with Navy on Friday night will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

* When opening the season at home, the Spartans own a perfect 3-0 mark.

* Navy is one of four opponents that Upstate will face that won a conference championship in 2008.

* Upstate is looking for its first win against Furman when they travel down I-85 on Monday night. Furman leads the all-time series 2-0.

* Coach Kendall Reyes is looking for his 70th victory as the head coach of the Spartans. Reyes owns a record of 69-87-13 at Upstate.

Stetson

* The Hatters were picked seventh in the A-Sun Preseason Coaches Poll after a seventh-place finish in 2008

* Stetson mid-fielder Tessa Gavilsky led her team a season ago in goals, assists, points and game winning goals. The junior hatter posted 29 points in 19 games a season ago. No other player on Stetson had more than six points in 2008.

* Stetson also returns keeper Andrea Garavaglia who posted a 1.37 goals-against average a season ago with a .750 save percentage.
