Saturday, October 03, 2009 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Mercer University women’s soccer picked up its first Atlantic Sun Conference victory, downing Jacksonville 1-0 on Friday evening at the Ashley Sports Complex. With tonight’s win, the Bears improve to 5-5-1 overall and 1-3 in A-Sun play. Jacksonville, on the other hand, falls under .500 to 5-6-0 overall and 2-1 in conference play. “Tonight’s game was very important for us in that we were able to pick up our first conference win of the season,” Mercer head coach Grant Serafy said. “Hopefully we can build on our win tonight and use it as a turning point moving forward into A-Sun play. Mercer out-shot Jacksonville 10-9 overall and 4-3 in shots on goal. The Dolphins held a slight 3-1 edge in corner kicks. The Bears scored the only goal of the game in the second half after a sluggish first half of play that featured just six total shots by both teams. In the 63rd minute of play, junior defender Kacie Hudson headed home a free kick from freshman Patricia-Anne Upson to give Mercer a 1-0 lead. |
