Monday, November 09, 2009

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference champion Kennesaw State Owls learned that No. 10-ranked Wake Forest of the Atlantic Coast Conference would be their first round opponent as the field of 64 teams playing for the 2009 Women’s College Cup was announced on Monday evening.

“This was not expected, but we are delighted to be playing Wake Forest,” said head coach Rob King. “They have a very good, talented squad so we will learn as much as we can, study tape and be prepared for Friday.”

In front of a large gathering at Mellow Mushroom that included coaches, players, former players, administration, staff and fans the Owls witnessed the bracket pairings as it was announced live on ESPNews.

After suffering through a break after the first 32 teams were announced, the tension grew until it was announced that the Owls (11-6-0) would travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to play the Demon Deacons.

“This is totally unexpected,” said senior Caitlin Dingle. “We are normally in the south, so going up to Wake Forest is going to be a tremendous experience. We’ll prepare hard and be ready for Friday.”

Joining the Black and Gold at Wake Forest this weekend will be Loyola (Md.) and West Virginia who will meet in the other first round match up. The Owls and the Demon Deacons will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Spry Stadium.
