Women's Soccer Two-A-Days: First Edition

MACON, Ga. - Each day from August 13th through the 20th, the Atlantic Sun Conference will preview the upcoming 2010 women’s soccer season with the A-Sun Two-A-Days, where we interview a player or coach from each of the eleven A-Sun teams. Today we talked with Alyssa Roegner of USC Upstate and Kate Spellman from Lipscomb University.

Game to Watch: Fri., August 20th vs. Charleston Southern - The Spartans take on Charleston Southern in their season and home opener, which will also serve as the debut for head coach Renee Lopez, who comes to Upstate from Lees-McRae.

Top Returning Scorer: Catherine Nolff - A senior defender for the Spartans, Nolff registered two goals last season, good for a tie for second on the team. Her goals came against South Carolina State and Stetson.

First Conference Game: The Spartans kick off A-Sun play against Belmont on Friday, Spetember 24th in a 7 p.m. showdown. Last season, Upstate opened the conference season with Jacksonville and suffered a 4-3 loss despite scoring a season high in goals.

Games to watch: Mon., August 23rd vs. Austin Peay – Last season, Lipscomb defeated in-state rival Austin Peay for the first time since 2002 with a 1-0 season-opening shutout. With head coach Jon Ireland entering his fourth season at the helm, Lipscomb will be looking to start their own winning streak against the Governors

Top Returning Scorer: Kate Spellman – With four goals and three assists last season, Spellman led the Lady Bisons in both categories as a junior. The Franklin, Tenn. Native tallied game-winning goals against Troy (9/2) and USC Upstate (10/2).

First Conference Game: On Friday, September 17th, the Lady Bisons square off with the defending A-Sun Champions, Kennesaw State in a home game for Lipscomb. Last season, the Owls came away with the victory on their home turf, but the last time the two teams meet in Nashville the Bisons claimed the 1-0 victory.
