MACON, Ga. – Jacksonville’s Alexa Rooney and ETSU’s Terri Miller secured the Atlantic Sun Women’s Soccer Player of the Week awards with their play on the pitch, as announced Monday by the league office. Rooney recorded a 1-0-1 mark for the week as the Dolphins tied USF, 1-1, and then blanked Francis Marion, 3-0. Miller registered both goals for the Bucs in a 2-1 defeat of Winthrop in the ETSU Soccer Invitational, which included the game-winning goal in overtime.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Terri Miller, ETSU (Forward – Sr. – Cape Coral, Fla. – Sports Management)
• Second A-Sun Player of the Week award
• Scored two goals including the game-winner in overtime against Winthrop
• Named to ETSU Soccer Invitational All-Tournament team
• Game-winning goal came on a diving header in the second overtime
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Alexa Rooney, Jacksonville (GK – Jr. – Peoria, Ill. – Exercise Science)
• Third A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week award
• Allowed one goal on the week in 162 minutes of play
• Tallied 53 minutes in a 3-0 shutout of Francis Marion
• Made 15 saves on the week, which included 13 against USF in a 1-1 tie
• Lone goal allowed came on a penalty kick against USF in the 85th minute
OTHER NOMINEES:
• Alma Gardarsdottir (MF, Kennesaw State) – scored both goals in a 2-1 victory against Georgia Southern
• Staci Pugh (GK, Kennesaw State) – made four saves in a 2-1 win against Georgia Southern
• Jenci Villaverde (F, FGCU) – tallied a goal and an assist in win against Vermont
• KC Correllus (D, FGCU) – helped shut out Vermont on Friday; named All-Tournament team
• Sarah Plantz (GK, USC Upstate) – made 11 saves on the week; earned first victory of the season
• Danielle White (MF/F, USC Upstate) – scored game-winning goal against Morehead State for team’s first victory
• Tatjana Shirley (F, Lipscomb) – registered two goals in a 3-0 win against The Citadel
• Erin Zerio (GK, Lipscomb) – recorded third shutout of the season with 3-0 win against The Citadel
• Tessa Gavilsky (MF, Stetson) – scored a goal in each of Stetson’s two road games
• Lauren Hoppensperger (F, UNF) – tallied game-winning goal against Francis Marion
• Cagney Vollach (GK, Mercer) – stopped four shots and allowed only one goal in 98 minutes
