MACON, Ga. - FGCU’s Ally Kasun was honored as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year after leading the Eagles to the A-Sun Women's Soccer Championship title in 2012 as the Championship's Most Valuable Player.
Kasun, a sophomore, put in seven goals for the Eagles last season including the game-winning goal vs. Mercer in the overtime of the A-Sun Championship.
FGCU came in at No. 1 in the predicted order of finish with five first-place votes and 95 total points after winning its second-straight A-Sun Championship. The Eagles have earned a share of the last three A-Sun Regular-Season Titles.
Jacksonville followed with 73 points, while the Dolphins’ Ally Lee captured Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Honors after leading the JU backline to five shutouts last season.
Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year was awarded to USC Upstate’s Sarah Plantz after a strong 2012 campaign where she secured 122 saves in net and ranked in the top-15 in the country in total saves.
Kasun was joined by three teammates on the preseason team including defenders Emma Blackwell and Melissa Arnold and forward Shannen Wacker. The FGCU defense tied for the league lead with 11 shutouts in 2012, while Wacker supplied 11 goals and 25 points - both of which ranked second in the A-Sun - for the offensive attack.
ETSU and Mercer finished tied for third in the coaches poll with 72 points after both teams qualified for last year's championship with Mercer advancing to the finals. The Bears’ Lauren Gassie and the Buccaneers’ Sarah Zadrazil were both selected as Preseason All-Conference members.
Fifth in the preseason poll, Kennesaw State found juniors Katrina Frost and Jewelia Strickland on the preseason team. Following the Owls, North Florida received 53 points in sixth and placed midfielder Thea Linkfield on the preseason team to round off the 11-person squad.
Lipscomb was picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll with Northern Kentucky, Stetson and USC Upstate following.
For the second year fans were given the chance to vote for who they thought deserved the preseason honors through the A-Sun's Facebook page.
The Eagles' Ally Kasun garnered enough votes to earn the Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year, while JU's Ally Lee secured 160 votes to be named the A-Sun Fan-Voted Preseason Defender of the Year.
Brittany Brown of FGCU received the most fan votes to secure the Fan-Voted Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
About the Vote All of the Atlantic Sun’s All-Conference Awards and Honors are voted on by the coaches in a ranking system. Candidates are nominated for all-conference through each individual institution. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players on the ballot.
