MACON, Ga. – After a tumultuous 2005 season marred by injuries, the Mercer women’s soccer team looks to rebound and take another step forward in head coach Grant Serafy’s rebuilding project.
Serafy followed up his strong recruiting efforts in 2005 with another solid class. The 2005 class was ranked first in the Atlantic Sun Conference by Soccer Buzz, while the 2006 class was ranked second in the league. The Bears will have to blend seven newcomers with 16 returners if they hope to obtain a berth in the A-Sun Tournament. Mercer has a lot of versatile players who will make Serafy’s job easier as he tries to find the right mix of personnel.
Mercer lost four starters from last year’s squad, most notably goalkeeper Lauren Burch, but Serafy feels that Mercer will have a strong pair of goalkeepers who will compete for playing time between the pipes.
Sophomore Fiorella Lanfranco and freshman Jean Worts will battle for the starting spot. Lanfranco started the final six matches of last season, winning two contests while posting one shutout.
