NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont and Gardner-Webb carried over their pre-conference success, posting shutouts in their A-Sun openers on Thursday. The two early season suprises meet on Saturday at the Whitten Soccer Complex.
Belmont held visiting Campbell scoreless for their first Atlantic Sun win of the season. The Bruins shutout the Camels, 1-0. The victory marked the second time Belmont shutout an opponent to open conference play. The Bruins completely dominated the match nearly from start to finish, keeping the ball deep in Camel territory. In the first minute of play in the second stanza, junior Kari Lennon found the back of the net with help from freshman Jennifer St. Clair. Bruin rookie goalkeeper Zirka Thompson went the distance for the first time this season and came away with three saves.
Freshman Kasey Gladhill’s goal in the 36th minute was all that Gardner-Webb would need Thursday evening in its first Atlantic Sun match of the season. Behind Gladhill’s score, the Bulldogs triumphed over the Lady Bisons of Lipscomb by a 1-0 score. Gladhill’s goal was her second on the year. Both scores have been of the game-winning variety. She notched her first collegiate goal in the 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Sept. 8. When Lipscomb attempted a shot on goal, sophomore Sarah Wyszynski played her role perfectly, recording two saves on the night en route to her fourth shutout of the season and career. The shutout moves Wyszynski into a fourth-place tie on the GWU single-season shutout list.
