TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 5 Florida State Seminoles scored four first-half goals en route to a 6-0 victory over the Jacksonville University women's soccer team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. on Friday night.
The Dolphins (11-10-1) end their 2006 season after producing their fifth-best win total in school history to win their second Atlantic Sun Conference title, while the Seminoles (15-3-4) will face the winner of Cal and Auburn on Sunday.
Senior Michelle Kmiotek, the A-Sun tournament MVP, tallied nine saves in her final match and sophomore Michelle Lavine led the offense with two shots.
Kmiotek's saves brings her to 173 on the season to give her a program-best total of 362. Her total also ranks third all-time in the A-Sun. She had a career-high nine shutouts in 2006 to record a school-high 18 for her tenure, which is ninth all-time in conference history.
"Overall, I am proud of all the girls' achievements this season," said JU head coach Chris Kouns. "With nine girls sick, we are disappointed that we couldn't give our best effort, but I'm happy our team got to the tournament because no one expected it with our young squad.
