JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Stetson University women's soccer team traveled to Jacksonville, Fla. Friday night to play Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Kick Out Cancer tournament hosted by Jacksonville University. After two overtime periods, and 100 minutes of play Stetson (1-0-1) and Coastal (0-2-1) played to a 1-1 tie.
The Lady Chanticleers opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first half. Ashleigh Gunning started the play with a long pass from midfield to Samantha Teijelo. The sophomore out of Holmdel, NJ then sent a crossing pass to Senior Amanda Gelsomino who was able to slip it past Hatter goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia.
"Overall I was really proud of the way our girls played tonight. We had about a 15-minute lapse where we let them score, just like our game against Presbyterian," said Hatter Head Coach Julie Orlowski. "We need to work on that."
Stetson answered Coastal's goal a few minutes later when DeLand's own, Sarah Stock scored her third goal of the season from ten yards out in the center of the box. The goal was assisted by Freshman Tessa Gavilsky out of Granite City, Illinois.
In the nightcap, Jacksonville's women's soccer team fell to Baylor, 6-2 at the Ashley Sports Complex.
"I was extremely proud of our team tonight," said JU head coach Chris Kouns. "We played an athletic and well coached opponent and played them toe to toe. We have two breakaways with their goalkeeper and created two more open goal back post chances. We simply did not finish our chances."
The Dolphins started the brighter of the two teams and were rewarded in the 10th minute after freshman midfielder Elizabeth Fink unleashed a drive from 25 yards out after receiving a pass from junior forward Keri Zwikker.
Baylor responded with four unanswered goals including two from freshman midfielder Lotto Smith in the 22nd minute and 66th minute respectively. Junior midfielder Carolyn Lynch scored in the 27th minute and senior midfielder Jessica Hutton scored in the 33rd.
Zwikker looked to bring the Dolphins back into the game with a goal in the 71st minute, but senior defender Megan Sherrell, who also had two assists, put things away for the Bears in the 86th minute, ending the game by the final score of 6-2.
