Tuesday, January 30, 2007 Macon, Ga. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team extended its season-opening win streak to four matches over the weekend behind senior Florencia Torres who posted a 3-0 singles record and a 2-0 doubles record on her way to being named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the league announced today. Torres, a psychology major from Tucuman, Argentina, assisted the Ospreys to a 3-0 weekend tour of the Lone Star state, picking up wins against Lamar, Texas-Pan American and Texas-El Paso. On Friday, Torres faced Maria Gutierrez of Lamar and handed her a straight set loss, winning both games 6-2. Against Texas-Pan American Torres moved into the No. 4 spot for the Ospreys and continued her winning ways with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Silke Buksik. In their final match of the weekend, the Ospreys faced Texas-El Paso but the outcome was the same as their first two matches of the weekend. UNF garnered yet another team victory as Torres sealed the deal with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Katherine Palider, ensuring a perfect 3-0 sweep through Texas. The award is the first for Torres in her career at UNF and the third for the Osprey since its inception in 2003. Torres follows teammate Vanessa Sanchez (March 30, 2006) and Lauren Cockbill (April 11, 2006). The Atlantic Sun Player of the Week is announced every Tuesday during the 2007 tennis season. The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08. |
