Macon, Ga. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team extended
its season-opening win streak to four matches over the weekend behind senior
Florencia Torres who posted a 3-0 singles record and a 2-0 doubles record on
her way to being named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, the league announced
today.
Torres, a psychology major from Tucuman, Argentina, assisted the Ospreys to
a 3-0 weekend tour of the Lone Star state, picking up wins against Lamar, Texas-Pan
American and Texas-El Paso. On Friday, Torres faced Maria Gutierrez of Lamar
and handed her a straight set loss, winning both games 6-2. Against Texas-Pan
American Torres moved into the No. 4 spot for the Ospreys and continued her
winning ways with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Silke Buksik. In their final match
of the weekend, the Ospreys faced Texas-El Paso but the outcome was the same
as their first two matches of the weekend. UNF garnered yet another team victory
as Torres sealed the deal with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Katherine Palider, ensuring
a perfect 3-0 sweep through Texas.
The award is the first for Torres in her career at UNF and the third for the
Osprey since its inception in 2003. Torres follows teammate Vanessa Sanchez
(March 30, 2006) and Lauren Cockbill (April 11, 2006).
