Macon, Ga. -- For the first time in nearly three years a Belmont student-athlete
has been selected as the Atlantic Sun's Player of the Week as the Bruins' Elizabeth
Conyer was selected by league officials for her combined 5-1 record in conference
play this past week.
Conyer was also the last student-athlete from Belmont to earn the award.
The Paducah, Ky., native went 3-0 in singles action, all against conference
opponents. On Friday she defeated Kennesaw State's Karen Ammann 6-3, 6-1 and
partnered with Katie Rhodes to earn a No. 2 doubles win. She finished the weekend
against Mercer's Anna Wieslander (6-2, 6-0) and Stetson's Breanna Atkinson (6-2,
6-3).
Against Mercer, the health major again partnered with Rhodes to earn an 8-4
victory. Her only loss of the week came in No. 2 doubles action with April Bradley.
The two fell to the Hatters' Catherine Canady and Anna Leonenko, 8-2.
The award is Conyer's second. She was the last Bruin to be honored when she
was named the POTW on March 30, 2004. It is just the third time that a Belmont
student-athlete has been honored as the A-Sun POTW. Starr Steffner was selected
on March 26, 2003.
The Atlantic Sun Player of the Week is announced every Tuesday during the
2007 tennis season.
The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and
Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
