Macon, Ga. -- For the first time since joining the Atlantic Sun in 2002, a
student-athlete from Gardner-Webb has been honored as the Player of the Week,
league officials announced today. The Bulldogs' Jenny Gomez posted a 3-0 singles
record this past week to become the first female tennis player in GWU history
to be acknowledged by the conference with such an honor.
Gomez, a sophomore from Rincon, Ga., earned wins again three conference foes
as Gardner-Webb faced Campbell, Belmont and Lipscomb, all on the road.
Against the Lady Camels, Gomez defeated Ana Surviladze 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 before
the team headed to Nashville, Tenn. for a weekend double-header. She finished
the week with wins over Tatiana Pozo (6-4, 6-7, 6-2) and Emily Ellis (6-2, 7-6)
of Belmont and Lipscomb, respectively.
Gomez earned all of her wins at the No. 3 singles spot, where she improved
to 6-0 on the season. Her record at that spot is the best in the Atlantic Sun
so far this season.
The honor is the first of its kind for Gomez. It is also the first time a student
athlete from GWU has been named the POTW since the school joined the Atlantic
Sun in 2002.
The Atlantic Sun Player of the Week is announced every Tuesday during the
2007 tennis season.
The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and
Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
