Johnson City, Tenn. - On the women's side, No. 2 seed ETSU began the Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championships with a 4-0 victory over No. 7seed Mercer. The Lady Bucs won the doubles matches 8-0 and 8-2. No. 1 Yevgeniya Stupak, No. 2 Masha Ilina and No. 4 Tara Byrne won the three singles matches to finish off Mercer.
ETSU advances to play the winner of No. 3 Stetson and No. 6 Gardner-Webb. The No. 2 seed Buccaneers are looking to defend their 2006 A-Sun Title.
Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, Emese Sulyos, and No. 1seed Jacksonville beat the Lipscomb Lady Bisons 4-0 on Friday to advance to the semifinals.
Jacksonville dominated the match throughout. The Dolphins took the doubles point easily, winning 8-0 and 8-1. Jacksonville had little trouble as well in singles play. Lena Willi defeated Erin Moakler 6-1, 6-0, and Tatiana Soldatova defeated Emily Ellis 6-1, 6-0 as well. Iva jaresova finished off the match by defeated Olivia Ellis 6-0, 6-1. The match ended with Emese Sulyos holding a 6-1, 5-0 lead over Raphaela Jann.
Jacksonville advances to the semifinals to face the winner of No. 4 Campbell and No. 5 Belmont at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The Stetson Hatters, seeded No. 3, bullied the No. 6 Seed Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 4-0 in the opening round of the Women's A-Sun Tennis Championship.
The Hatters grabbed the doubles point with their No. 1 team of Anna Leonenko and Katherine Nowicki beating Amy Beavers and Laura Kriett 8-6. Stetson's No. 3 doubles squad of Breanna Atkinson and Katherine St. Clair defeated Kasey ellis and Carol Pancia 8-1.
In singles play, the Hatters No. 1, Valentina Galbarini, No. 2 Breanna Atkinson and No. 6, Samantha Lange all beat their Bulldog opponents to clinch the victory for Stetson. All singles matches that were not finished when play ended were being led by the Hatters.
Stetson moves on to play No. 2 seed ETSU at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The No 5. seed Belmont Lady Bruins finished the day on the women's side with a 4-3 win over fourth-seeded Campbell.
The Bruins No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams won their matches 8-4 and 8-6. Belmont was victorious in No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Fighting Camels were winners in No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Belmont advances to the semifinals and will face No. 1 seed Jacksonville at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
