Stetson Sweeps Weekly Honors for the Second Time

MACON, Ga. - The Stetson Hatters won a pair of matches last week to even their record at 3-3 after an 0-3 start to 2009. Junior Katherine Nowicki tallied four victories in the two matches, winning at doubles and singles in both matches, including a pair of straight-sets singles triumphs. On Wednesday, Nowicki earned the first Player of the Week honor of her career the conference office announced.
Nowicki was the star performer for the Hatters in a 7-0 win over Bethune-Cookman on Thursday and a 5-2 triumph over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, going a perfect 4-0 for the week. In two dominating victories in doubles matches, she and classmate Breanna Atkinson dropped a total of one game. In the singles portions of the proceedings, Nowicki won both her matches in straight sets, beating B-CU's Valecia Kendrick 7-6, 6-4 and taking out SFA's Tatiana Smolnikova 6-1, 7-5. She played at the No. 4 singles position in both matches.

Yevgeniya Stupak, ETSU (Kyiv, Ukraine – Jr. – Business) – Stayed unbeaten moving to 3-0 on the season in singles play after defeating Olga Mokhova of Charleston Southern, 6-1, 6-2. The A-Sun preseason player of the year has yet to drop a set this season. Also along with freshman teammate Paula Jamie, the ETSU pair won its second straight doubles match 8-0 against Charleston Southern.
Ayano Tanaka, Kennesaw State (Norcross – So. – Undeclared) – Tanaka moved her singles record to 5-2 with a pair of wins at No. 2 singles...Blanked Alabama State's Maria Hunter 6-0, 6-0 on Friday before giving the Owls a 3-2 lead over Florida A&M with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Latreece Olagbegbi on Saturday...Went undefeated in doubles as well, pairing with Vera Shkundina for an 8-0 win on Friday and a 9-7 win on Saturday.
